What you need to know about full subject-based banding

Full Subject Based Banding in Secondary 1

Starting in 2024, full subject-based banding (SBB) will be implemented in 120 secondary schools across Singapore, replacing the Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) streams. Here's an overview:

  1. What is Subject-Based Banding (SBB)?

    • Introduced in 2019, SBB allows students to take subjects at different levels (G3, G2, G1) based on their strengths.

    • G3, G2, and G1 correspond to current Express, N(A), and N(T) standards, respectively.

    • Piloted since 2020, SBB organizes students from different academic backgrounds into the same form classes.

  2. Key Changes in 2024:

    • Humanities subjects will be included for SBB at Secondary 2, alongside English, math, science, and mother tongue, which are already offered at higher levels.

  3. Posting Groups:

    • After PSLE, students are assigned to posting groups 3, 2, or 1, which map to the current Express, N(A), and N(T) streams.

    • These groups help guide subject levels and school admission but do not impact school life afterward.

    • Students in option bands (scores 21-22 or 25) can choose to apply as a higher or lower posting group.

  4. Impact on Secondary 1 Posting:

    • Students should consider their PSLE score, posting group, and the secondary school’s cut-off points when selecting schools.

    • Those in option bands can apply to schools that accept either of their eligible posting groups.

    • Posting groups guide subject levels at entry but allow flexibility for higher-level subject options later.
