What you need to know about full subject-based banding
Starting in 2024, full subject-based banding (SBB) will be implemented in 120 secondary schools across Singapore, replacing the Express, Normal (Academic), and Normal (Technical) streams. Here's an overview:
What is Subject-Based Banding (SBB)?
Introduced in 2019, SBB allows students to take subjects at different levels (G3, G2, G1) based on their strengths.
G3, G2, and G1 correspond to current Express, N(A), and N(T) standards, respectively.
Piloted since 2020, SBB organizes students from different academic backgrounds into the same form classes.
Key Changes in 2024:
Humanities subjects will be included for SBB at Secondary 2, alongside English, math, science, and mother tongue, which are already offered at higher levels.
Posting Groups:
After PSLE, students are assigned to posting groups 3, 2, or 1, which map to the current Express, N(A), and N(T) streams.
These groups help guide subject levels and school admission but do not impact school life afterward.
Students in option bands (scores 21-22 or 25) can choose to apply as a higher or lower posting group.
Impact on Secondary 1 Posting:
Students should consider their PSLE score, posting group, and the secondary school’s cut-off points when selecting schools.
Those in option bands can apply to schools that accept either of their eligible posting groups.
Posting groups guide subject levels at entry but allow flexibility for higher-level subject options later.
